Christina Aguilera's Boyfriend Escapes DUI Charge

Matthew Rutler's blood alcohol content was determined to be within legal limit.

It looks like there won't be any charges filed following the early-morning traffic stop during which Christina Aguilera was taken in for allegedly being publicly drunk.

According to TMZ, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office has officially rejected the case against Aguilera's boyfriend, Matthew Rutler, citing insufficient evidence to prosecute him for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Rutler, 25, was pulled over by police early on the morning of March 1 on suspicion of DUI, but according to unnamed law enforcement sources, his blood alcohol content was determined to be .06 at the time of his arrest, which is under California's legal limit to operate a vehicle, .08. Aguilera was the passenger in the car, and at the time a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesperson confirmed that one of the hosts of "The Voice" was "so intoxicated she couldn't take care of herself." The incident resulted in Aguilera, 30, being hit with a misdemeanor charge of suspicion of public drunkenness. But the Sheriff's Department announced later in the day that there was no intention of prosecuting the singer in the case.

At the time, Aguilera's arrest was seen as part of a professional and personal tailspin the singer had fallen into following a series of public hiccups. It came after the 2010 flop of her Bionic album, followed by a hastily canceled U.S. tour, the disappointing returns for her big-screen debut in "Burlesque" and her just-finalized divorce from husband Jordan Bratman. Those incidents were topped by her infamous flubbing of the national anthem at February's Super Bowl and a stumble on the Grammys stage a week later, amid tabloid reports that her partying had gotten out of hand.

And though Aguilera kept quiet about the arrest at the time, she spoke to Us magazine earlier this month about her series of "setbacks" and how she was recovering from them.

"I've gone through a really hard divorce, and anyone who has gone through a divorce will speak about how hard the journey is from start to finish," Aguilera told the magazine. "It's a life-uprooting time and there have been hiccups along the way that unfortunately the whole world gets to witness and judge. ... I can laugh about my own hiccups and my own experiences in life because I'm getting through it."

Aguilera seems on the path back to success with her latest gig as one of four coaches on NBC's upcoming singing contest, "The Voice," where she'll help aspiring singers alongside Cee Lo Green, Maroon 5's Adam Levine and country singer Blake Shelton.

NBC has been relentlessly promoting the show, which premieres on April 26 and is being touted as competition for "American Idol."

Beyonce At VMAs And More Public Baby Reveals

Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez have also taken to live audiences to break the news.
By James Dinh

Beyoncé set Twitter on fire when she hinted on the VMA black carpet that she was set to make a big announcement, placing a hand on her stomach. Speculation turned into overwhelming joy when the pop superstar announced her pregnancy at the end of her "Love on Top" performance by unbuttoning her sparkling blazer and rubbing her noticeable bump.

Bey's public announcement came as a bit of a surprise, given that the songstress usually gets media-shy when asked anything about her personal life during interviews. MTV News reached out to pop-culture expert Rob Shuter, columnist for HuffPost Celebrity, for his thoughts on how she revealed the big news. "I thought it was so brilliant that somebody as private as Beyoncé and Jay-Z would make their own rules to address the fact that she's clearly pregnant," he said.

Shuter explained that the power couple's private nature made the revelation all the more joyous. "I love that this couple who has made it a policy to not talk about their personal life would once again do that, let us in on this huge secret, without ever really uttering any words."

Click for photos of Beyoncé's big VMA night.

Kim Kardashian, a real pro at living publicly, told MTV News that she admired B's choice of venue. "I thought it was really cool of her to come out and show that at the VMAs, 'cause music is her outlet. She could have done it with any magazine or news station, but she chose her home."

Beyoncé is now among the ranks of other starlets who have chosen creative venues to reveal the anticipated news. Take a look at how some other A-list moms revealed their baby bumps:

Britney Spears, 2006
Surprises come by the dozen when we're talking about Britney Spears' life and career, and she had another one up her sleeve when she took to "The Late Show With David Letterman" in May 2006 to confirm her second pregnancy with then-husband Kevin Federline. "Don't worry, Dave. It's not yours," the pop star laughingly told the late-night host after he circled around the question. Spears gave birth to her son Jayden James Federline that September and filed for divorce just two months later.

Jennifer Lopez, 2007
It was only appropriate that J.Lo chose a concert as her venue to announce that she and husband Marc Anthony were having a baby — he was the tour's co-headliner. "We didn't want to say anything before, because we didn't want to take away from the tour, but Marc and I are expecting," the pop star revealed to fans during the Miami stop of her El Cantante Tour. Anthony then turned to his wife, kissed her belly and told the crowd that he "did not expect her to say anything." Lopez gave birth to fraternal twins Emme and Maximilian Muñiz, in early 2008.

Ashlee Simpson, 2008
Ashlee Simpson and then-husband Pete Wentz make our list not because of their announcement but because of their steadfast policy before they made it: deny, deny, deny. Simpson even shied away from the question during an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" as the pregnancy rumors were at their height. "Well, that has been going on for quite a while. That is something that I choose personally not to discuss," Simpson said, before cracking a joke about whether she looks like she can eat "10 cheese burgers or something." Almost a month later, the couple took to FriendsOrEnemies.com to confirm the news, writing, "While many have speculated about this, we wanted to wait until after the first trimester to officially confirm that we are expecting our first child."

Jessica Alba, 2011
Some use their Facebook news feed to talk about work or current events. Some use it to talk with friends. Jessica Alba used it to announce her pregnancy to the world. "It's been a while since I've been on FB & I thought I'd drop by to let you all in on some exciting news>Honor is going to be a Big Sister!" the actress wrote in February. Just a couple weeks ago, Alba gave birth to a baby girl named Haven Garner Warren and, as expected, took to her Facebook profile to announce the news.

Post Your Well Wishes For Jay and Bey on Facebook.

Hilary Duff, 2011
Hilary Duff also favors the Internet for her personal revelations. In celebration of her one-year anniversary to husband Mike Comrie, the starlet offered fans with an extra special blog post. "I can't believe it has already been a year, time really flies when you're having fun!" she wrote on her website in mid-August. "We also want to share the exciting news that ...... BABY MAKES THREE!!!" Since then, the former Disney actress has taken to her Twitter to dish on her many pregnancy cravings: "Today it was rice crispy treats! trying really hard to give them ALL away!!!"

Maroon 5 Say Mick Endorses 'Moves Like Jagger' Video

Jonas Åkerlund directs clip, which pays tribute to Rolling Stones frontman's many eras.

Maroon 5's Adam Levine has already made a compelling argument for why his band's new single, "Moves Like Jagger," deserves to be your pick for the Summer Jam of 2011: Basically, unless you want to have the worst beach trip ever, you will add the song to your playlist.

But now, with the new "Jagger" video, Levine's making an equally compelling argument for why the Rolling Stones frontman deserves to be a part of your summer, too — mainly because he's pretty much the coolest guy ever.

"We were lucky enough to get Mick's endorsement [for the video], as far as him giving us access to a bunch of different footage that's so cool," Levine explained. "Not many people have seen [it], especially a newer generation of people that don't know so much about how incredible he was."

Maroon 5 teamed with director Jonas Åkerlund — who's helmed clips for everyone from Lady Gaga and Britney Spears to the Prodigy and Blink-182 — for the "Jagger" video, which allowed the band to focus its attention on replicating the icon's moves.

"It's kind of a hodgepodge of many different ideas that we wanted to do, and Jonas Åkerlund is at the helm of this whole thing, and he's so talented and we love working with him, and this is going to be another great video, I think," Levine said. "We trust him so much that we can kind of take ourselves out of it a little more and just be like, 'He's Jonas, so he'll do his thing.' "

Eminem, Nirvana Pave Way For 2011 VMA Best New Artist

Big Sean, Foster the People, Kreayshawn, Tyler, the Creator or Wiz Khalifa will follow in their footsteps come Sunday.
By Gil Kaufman

Eminem accepts the award for Best New Artist at the 1999 VMAs

We're all rookies at some point, but when it comes to the MTV Video Music Awards' Best New Artist category, you only get one shot at being the new kid on the block. And for this year's nominees — Big Sean, Foster the People, Kreayshawn, Tyler, the Creator and Wiz Khalifa — now is their time to shine and join an illustrious list of previous winners that includes Lady Gaga, Guns N' Roses, Justin Bieber and 50 Cent.

Since the very first Moonman was handed out in this category in 1984, MTV has a pretty stellar track record for picking artists who either went on to superstardom or at least represent a very specific moment in time (we're looking at you, Jesus Jones).

While hip-hop heavy, this year's nominees span a pretty wide range of styles, from Kreayshawn's bawdy, viral sensation "Gucci Gucci" to Khalifa's day-in-the-life "Black and Yellow," Tyler's bugged-out, arty "Yonkers," Big Sean's penthouse-rockin' "My Last" and the DIY feel of the lone rock entry, Foster the People's "Pumped Up Kicks."

Who's gonna win? Well, you'll have to tune in Sunday to find out, but chances are whoever takes home the prize will be a name you'll be hearing for a good, long time. The very first BNA Moonman went to the Eurythmics in 1984, notable not just because of that British synth soul duo's long, hit-filled career, but because they beat out a singer that went on to quite a career herself: Madonna.

Over the years, such beloved bands as Crowded House (1987), GN'R (1988), Nirvana (1992), Eminem (1999), Alicia Keys (2001), 50 (2003) and Gaga (2009) have taken the prize.

"I will always remember Best New Artist," Lady Gaga told MTV News recently, recalling how she surprised Eminem by asking him to hold her Moonman as she thanked "God and the gays" and took off her red lace mask. "The first time that MTV recognized me, that changed my life."

Of course, there have also been some winners whose video work represented their artistic and commercial high point, such as 'Til Tuesday (1985), A-ha (1986), Michael Penn (1990), the aforementioned Jesus Jones (1991), Fiona Apple (1997) and Macy Gray (2000).

Even more surprising are the commercial heights reached by a number of nominated acts who didn't win the award but went on to some pretty stellar careers regardless, including Whitney Houston (1986), Lenny Kravitz (1990), Beck and Green Day (1994), Kid Rock (1999), Christina Aguilera and Pink (2000), Coldplay (2001), Katy Perry (2008) and Nicki Minaj (2010).

And, of course, there are the nominees who make you think: Really? Sure, Timbuk3's "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" was fun, but Best New Artist? The same might be said for others whose careers never quite reached their initial peaks, from Neneh Cherry (1989) to Jane Child (1990), Gerardo (1991), Chumbawamba (1998), Orgy (1999), the Darkness (2004) and James Blunt (2006).

Viewers can vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com online or m.mtv.com on their mobile phone. In addition, Best New Artist text voting is open to all wireless carrier subscribers by texting BNA to 66333. Voting continues through the show, live on Sunday.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Lil Wayne Pulls Out Rock-Star Flair For VMA Show-Closer

Tunechi delivered a scorching combo of 'How to Love' and 'John' to end the show on Sunday night.
By Alvin Blanco

Lil Wayne closes out a hectic week that included a skateboarding mishap and a Jay-Z dis by proving he's just as much rock star as he is rap star. Weezy F. closed out the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards with a scorching performance of his hits "How to Love" and "John."

"You know, he always comes different: One day he's a rock star, one day he's a skater; he's singing R&B. I think we can expect a little bit of everything in this performance," Weezy's musical director Gil Smith told MTV News last week.

He wasn't kidding.

YMCMB wunderkind Drake introduced Weezy, who kicked off his performance singing his hit rap ballad "How to Love," with Auto-tune effects added to his microphone. Backed by a live band, Lil Tunechi eased down the stage sporting a black top hat, snug-fitting animal prints pants, a white V-neck T-shirt and red Vans.

After showing off his vocal chops and finishing the first verse of "How to Love," Weezy then took off the hat and shirt, put back on his sunglasses, and after uttering, "Ladies and gentleman, my name is Lil Wayne," screamed and launched into "John." The band replaced the original instrumental with the familiar groove of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man," giving the performance a decidedly hard-rock turn as the rapper hyperactively jumped around the stage.

After kicking his verse for "John," which features Rick Ross, Weezy ran into the crowd and greeted Rozay. Back onstage, he picked up a white and black guitar and told the crowd to put their hands in the air (along with plenty of expletives) and played a few notes, before removing the instrument and slamming it to the stage.

With Jay-Z and Beyoncé clearly beaming about expecting their first child, and the Throne setting the stage on fire earlier in the night, many couldn't help but wonder if Weezy would lob any shots at Jay.

But that was not to happen, as Weezy ended his set by returning to the mic one final time to say, "Young moolah, baby," before tossing the mic stand to the floor. Although Weezy was up for awards in a pair of categories — Best Hip-Hop Video for "6 Foot, 7 Foot" and Best Collaboration for his part on Chris Brown's "Look at Me Now" — he didn't earn a Moonman this year.

As a consolation, Weezy should sleep well knowing his new Tha Carter IV album dropped at midnight via digital retailers and the physical CD is hitting shelves later Monday morning (August 29).

Michael Jackson's Legacy, Two Years Later, By the Numbers

Legendary singer's impact continues to blossom in the two years since his death; MTV News breaks down the figures.
By Gil Kaufman

Michael Jackson
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Like Elvis, Bob Marley, Notorious B.I.G. and Frank Sinatra before him, Michael Jackson's influence has continued, and grown, since his untimely death on June 25, 2009.

On the second anniversary of the King of Pop's passing, MTV News took a look at the enduring appeal of MJ's music, videos and imagery, which continue to fascinate and attract fans across the globe thanks to a series of posthumous albums, a movie, video games and two upcoming Cirque du Soleil live shows.

Where Were You Two Years Ago When You Heard the News? Tell Us on Facebook

$72 million: According to Box Office Mojo, Jackson's posthumous concert film, "This Is It," has grossed more than $72 million to date domestically and $189 million in foreign markets for a worldwide take over more than $261 million. It ranks as the #2 music documentary of all-time behind Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never." The film has also generated nearly $45 million in DVD sales in the U.S.

16: In May, Jackson lodged his first #1 on the Billboard magazine Dance/ Club Play Songs chart in 16 years with the latest single from his posthumous Michael album, "Hollywood Tonight."

2: Number of posthumous albums that have been released since Michael's death in June 2009. Last year's Michael has sold just over 510,000 copies to date, while the This Is It collection has moved nearly 1 million copies to date in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.

15,000: The number of videos submitted by fans since March for the crowdsourced video for "Behind the Mask." After they were edited down by a five-person team over two months, the resulting clip used submissions from more than 1,600 participants from 103 countries.

3 million: The amount of copies sold of the Ubisoft "Michael Jackson: The Experience" video game worldwide.

$57 million: The reported cost of Cirque du Soleil's traveling MJ show, "The Immortal World Tour, which is slated to kick off on October 2.

$1 billion: That gaudy figure is the reported amount the Jackson estate had generated by last June on the first anniversary of the singer's death. According to Billboard, the revenue was generated by a combination of music sales ($429 million), film/TV revenue ($392 million), music publishing ($130 million), licensing ($35 million) and a $31 million recording contract. (A spokesperson for Jackson's estate declined to provide updated figures for this story.)

$310 million: The amount of gross earnings reported by the executors of the estate in a December 2010 court filing detailing the progress made in paying off the $400 million in debt run up by the spendthrift singer during his lifetime.

16.1 million: MJ was always a big singles artist. Yes, Thriller is one of the best-selling albums of all time, but even in death, fans can't resist cherry-picking some of Michael's best songs. That explains why he's sold more than 16 million digital tracks since June 28, 2009, the first sales week following his passing, according to Nielsen SoundScan. To put that in perspective, from the time Nielsen began counting digital tracks in 2004 until the week before Jackson's death, the singer had sold just over 8.1 million digital tracks, a figure that has doubled in just the past two years.

2013: The projected launch for a second, non-touring Cirque show celebrating Jackson. The yet-untitled show is slated to open in the spring of 2013 at a new theater being built at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.

$25 million to $50 million: That's how much Jackson's estate takes in on an annual basis thanks to his stake in the half-million-song Sony/ATV catalog, which includes titles by Elvis, Lady Gaga, Eminem, Beyoncé and Bob Dylan.

Share your memories of Michael Jackson in the comments.

Justin Bieber Tops List Of Richest Teen Entertainers

People magazine reports Bieber made $53 million last year, followed by Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner and others.
By Gil Kaufman

Justin Bieber
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

Justin Bieber had a very good year. Seriously, like a major one that rivals most corporate CEOs'. According to a People magazine ranking of the top-earning teen actors and musicians, Bieber, 17, raked in $53 million in 2010.

Most of that cash came from his smash movie, "Never Say Never," and his hit fragrance, "Someday." (By contrast, girlfriend Selena Gomez made $5.5 million.) Bieber reached that big-baller level thanks to the record-breaking returns from "Never," which is the most successful concert-themed film in U.S. history, with more than $73 million earned to date.

Nipping at his heels was veteran teen starlet Miley Cyrus, whose haul was $48 million, almost all of it earned from touring.

Other big earners on the list include "Twilight" top wolf Taylor Lautner, who earned $8.5 million for the final two installments of the movie series, as well as $7.5 million for his upcoming starring debut in the action thriller "Abduction."

Nick Jonas had a very good year as well, with totals around $12.5 million, while "Two and a Half Men" star Angus T. Jones banked $7.8 million, thanks to a $300,000 per episode payday.

Jaden and Willow Smith made the list, with Jaden earning $5 million last year, $3 million of it from his starring role in "The Karate Kid," while sister Willow's music career rang up $4 million.

Acting sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning also did pretty well, with Dakota, 17, getting $4 million for "Breaking Dawn" and Elle, 13, taking home $1.5 million for "Super 8."

'Battleship' Trailer: The Five Key Scenes

We see a whole lot of Brooklyn Decker's skin and an alien ship, but blink and you'll miss Rihanna.
By Eric Ditzian

Photo: Universal Pictures

"Battleship" may be based on a board game, but the action flick's first trailer shows an influence far more cinematic than anything having to do with little plastic pegs and the faux-sinking of tiny seafaring vessels. The new footage, which Yahoo! premiered on Wednesday (July 27), begins like an ode to a "Blue Crush"-ish beach make-out movie, veers into "Armageddon"-esque father-vs.-daughter's-boyfriend antagonism, then explodes in an orgy of a couple dozen alien-invasion movie references.

Totally original, this one ain't. But it's also pretty damn entertaining, and we really are looking forward to checking out the madness when it hits theaters on May 18, 2012. Until then, here are our picks for the five key "Battleship" trailer moments.

Brooklyn, Obviously
One of these days, Brooklyn Decker is going to get a movie role that doesn't require her to parade around a beach in a bikini. Or not. One thing is certain after checking out this footage and taking in her performance, such as it was, in Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It": Decker, the Sports Illustrated model, has been typecast. In "Battleship," she finds herself in the middle of one of cinema's oldest relationship pickles: in love with a bad boy whom her dad can't freaking stand. Clearly the relationship between the boy (a naval officer played by Taylor Kitsch) and the daddy (Liam Neeson's no-nonsense admiral) will factor into the battle with these aliens. Let's just hope it doesn't become the emotional focus.

Don't Tread on Me
Everything in the Navy's military exercises in the big blue ocean seems to be going well until they encounter a hulking contraption submerged in the water. One unlucky dude (Kitsch) is sent out to touch base, literally, with the alien ship, unleashing a whole lot of extraterrestrial terror. The aliens, we'll soon learn, are here to utilize our oceans as a power source. This one shot raises a bunch of questions. Why are the ship's defenses activated by simple touch, rather than the proximity of the Navy? What kind of tech do the aliens possess that they can send a sort of shockwave that hurtles a man so far, so quickly? And what's inside the ship that we don't yet see?

What a Big Bubble You Have!
Speaking of alien weaponry, the ship is capable of unleashing some kind of bubble force field that encompasses an enemy and, so it seems, destroys everything within it. We'll just ignore, for now, how the bubble reminds us of that containment unit in "The Simpsons Movie." Instead, let's concentrate on the alien tech. We're hoping for originality and cool visuals to join forces and deliver us a satisfying early summer movie experience. The bubble, perhaps, is the harbinger of fun, absurd, eye-popping stuff to come.

She Needs an Umbrella
"Battleship" marks Rihanna's big-screen debut. In the trailer, blink and you miss her. But she's there, standing up in a raft and looking wet as the alien craft flies overhead. She certainly looks freaked out. But we can't yet get a sense of her acting chops from this footage; and hey, we might not be able to even after this popcorn flick's credits roll. All we can say for now is she had a blast on the production. "Working with [director] Peter Berg is unbelievable," she told us last fall. "I love doing movies now. It's something I want to do more of. I just want to pick films that are wise for me and roles that I can pull off, nothing that is too big for me."

Taking Flight
We have to say we're surprised how much of the alien ship we get to see in this first trailer. We see how it's a craft that can both plunge into the water and also take flight. We see how it can transform and shift and hover; quite a lot of control, those aliens have on this sucker. We see its cylinder-shaped weaponry. We see the front of the ship almost seems to have a face. So the question is: How much did filmmakers hold back? We haven't, for instance, seen the aliens themselves. With so many alien flicks hitting theaters each year, it's getting harder and harder to surprise audiences with those creatures. Can "Battleship" do it? Stay tuned.

Check out everything we've got on "Battleship."

Kim Kardashian's VMA Highlight: Beyonce's Big News

'It was really cool of her to come out and show that at the VMAs, 'cause music is her outlet,' newlywed says.
By Kelley L. Carter

Kim Kardashian rushed back from her honeymoon this weekend and made it to the Nokia Theatre in time to present Best Male Video at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. But her favorite highlight of the evening was the same as many of us viewing from home: getting the Beyoncé pregnancy news!

The newlywed talked with MTV News' Jim Cantiello after the show and said that she loved seeing the pop star pat her pregnant belly onstage after running through a high-energy performance of her track "Love on Top."

At the beginning of her performance, Beyoncé emerged from the darkness, saying, "Tonight I want you to stand up on your feet. I want you to feel the love that's growing inside of me!"

Beyoncé and Jay-Z celebrate their big news backstage.

Married to hip-hop superstar Jay-Z for three years, the star has said time and time again that she planned on having a baby by the time she was 30, and she turns 30 on Sunday. Her husband beamed at the end of her performance while pal and collaborator Kanye West congratulated him.

None of that excitement was lost on Kardashian.

"Beyoncé is definitely my highlight," Kardashian said. "I adore her anyway, but it was so sweet. I thought it was really cool of her to come out and show that at the VMAs, 'cause music is her outlet. She could have done it with any magazine or news station, but she chose her home. I thought it was really cool."

And speaking of having babies, that's exactly what Kardashian said she'd be doing right now if she weren't busy with her ever-rising career.

"I would be a mom right now, for sure," she said, in response to a question from fans. "I love kids, and I would probably have done this a lot sooner."

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Stick with MTV News for winners, fashion pics, video and behind-the-scenes stories about everything that went down. Visit VMA.MTV.com for the latest.

Michael Jackson Estate Threatens Legal Action Over Tribute Concert

'Michael Forever' concert rescinds invitation for Kiss to perform following complaints from estate and fans.
By Gil Kaufman

Several weeks after announcing their intention to celebrate the life of Michael Jackson with an all-star concert called "Michael Jackson Forever," the initial lineup for the October 8 show at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, was revealed last week.

According to promoters, the Michael Forever show is slated to feature such stars as Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Motown legend Smokey Robinson, in addition to less globally popular talents, including Alexandra Burke, Pixie Lott, Leona Lewis, JLS, Craig David, Alien Ant Farm and a pair of Jackson-related groups, 3T and the Jackson Brothers.

The one thing the event does not have, however, is the approval of Jackson's powerful estate, which had kept silent about the show put together by parents Joseph and Katherine Jackson, along with siblings Jackie, Tito, Marlon, LaToya and Rebbie. Brothers Jermaine and Randy have not been involved in the plans and have publicly objected to the event because it falls in the middle of the involuntary manslaughter trial of Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray.

On Tuesday (August 16) a spokesperson for the estate — which has handled all of Jackson's affairs since his 2009 death — confirmed that estate lawyer Howard Weitzman sent a letter to concert organizers last week raising some pointed questions about the show.

"I represent the Executors of the Estate of Michael Jackson. As the legal caretakers of Michael's intellectual property, we believe it is our duty to contact you directly regarding the growing number of questions that have been addressed to the Estate, as well as multiple concerns that have emerged in recent days," reads the letter.

After reminding organizers that the estate is the only entity that can sign off on the use of Jackson's image or his intellectual property — the concert's website is careful not to feature any images of the singer or samples of his music — the letter said the estate was "especially disappointed" by the announcement on Monday that greasepaint rockers Kiss have been added to the bill.

Specifically, the beef was that outspoken Kiss bassist Gene Simmons has made a number of disparaging comments about Jackson in the past. "It was extraordinarily embarrassing when no sooner had you announced this 'news' that [Simmons] would participate in your concert that TMZ posted an item noting that Mr. Simmons called Michael Jackson ... a child molester, notwithstanding the fact that Michael was acquitted by a jury," read the letter.

Jackson fansite MJ4Justice was flooded with negative comments about the addition of Kiss, announced on Monday by Katherine Jackson on CNN, and has called for a boycott of the show. The concert's Facebook page has also been inundated with concerns over the booking of Kiss.

And the complaints worked. On Tuesday, the concert's promoter, Global Live Events, canceled Kiss' "invitation" to appear in the show. "We have listened to Michael's fans and are grateful to have been alerted to these unfortunate statements by Gene Simmons," CEO Chris Hunt said in a statement. "Under the circumstances we fully agree that even though Kiss is a band Michael admired we have no choice but to rescind our invitation to them to appear in our tribute concert. We offer our sincerest apologies to Mrs. Jackson and the family for this oversight — our primary concern must be to do justice to Michael's memory, and to put on a tribute that the family and the fans will find suitable and fit for a King, our King of Pop."

The estate also expressed concerns about the promotion of the concert as a charity event, noting that it is using Jackson's "good name" to promote contributions, when the charitable element of the show is voluntary. "It appears from your interviews and from your website that none of the (approximately $90-$390) per person ticket price is committed to charitable causes," the letter states. The estate asked for clarity on to whom the charitable contributions are going , as well as an explanation of the small type clause that says that refunds will not be offered if "50% or more of the number of contracted artists attend and perform."

A spokesperson for the concert had not returned requests for comment about the donations at press time. Tickets are being distributed in lottery fashion, with fans asked to register for the chance to buy them in order to, "avoid the usual frantic rush and confusion when tickets for big events go on sale," according to the concert's website.

"Michael Jackson always made sure his fans were treated to concert experiences so spectacular that they would remember the evening for the rest of their lives," lawyer Weitzman concluded. "He always treated his fans with the utmost respect. In light of the questions raised above and the confusion surrounding this 'event,' we are extremely concerned about Michael's legacy, his fans and the public-at-large." The letter asks promoter Global Live to address those concerns and those of the singer's fans as soon as possible.

Maroon 5 Go Retro In New 'Moves Like Jagger' Video

Christina Aguilera appears in new clip, along with archival footage of Mick Jagger himself.

Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera are taking viewers on a nostalgic romp through the '70s in their new video for "Moves Like Jagger." The four-and-a-half-minute clip, which debuted Tuesday (August 9), takes place at the historic L.A. Theatre and, as the song title suggests, features a lot of people trying to move like Mick Jagger.

The Jonas Åkerlund-directed clip opens with black-and-white footage of the theater, shots of work crews assembling lighting and equipment onstage and groups of extras getting into costume, warming up for a shoot. This is followed by classic footage of Jagger, during which a reporter asks the iconic Rolling Stones frontman how long he plans to make music.

"I don't know. I never thought I'd be doing it for two years even," a young Jagger says, as the opening whistles of the Maroon 5 song kick in, throughout which a slew of Jagger look-alikes are shown dancing up to a central microphone, interlaced with archival footage of Jagger himself and shots of bandmembers James Valentine, Jesse Carmichael, Michael Madden and Matt Flynn rocking out on their instruments. Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine eventually takes center stage to start singing wearing nothing but snug-fitting polyester pants and his colorful tattoos.

True to its name, the video is mostly a mash-up of people trying to move like Jagger, including Levine. When Aguilera makes her brief appearance, she fits right into the retro feel with mascara-heavy lashes and a floppy hat. We don't see her Jagger moves, though.

For the eagle-eyed fans out there, watch out for the cheeky "Who the f--- is Mick Jagger?" T-shirt Levine and several extras sport at various moments in the clip. For Levine and his bandmates, the song and video are all about exposing a new generation to the rock legend.

"We were lucky enough to get Mick's endorsement [for the video], as far as him giving us access to a bunch of different footage that's so cool," Levine told MTV News when we visited the video's set last month. "Not many people have seen [it], especially a newer generation of people that don't know so much about how incredible he was."

Chris Brown VMA Set: 'Get Ready,' Swizz Beatz Warns

After hitting the stage himself last year, producer/rapper looks forward to watching Lil Wayne, Pitbull performances.

LOS ANGELES -- Swizz Beatz has been to the big show before. The sought-after producer/rapper hit the VMA stage last year to join Drake and Mary J. Blige for a memorable performance of "Fancy," and on Sunday, he's amped to watch Lil Wayne, Chris Brown and Pitbull do their thing.

Beatz spoke to MTV News just hours before taking the stage at the Taco Bell Feed the Beat MTV2 VMA concert on Friday (August 26) at the Music Box in Los Angeles on a bill featuring Chiddy Bang and Wallpaper, and he offered some advice to Weezy and Pitbull about making VMA headlines.

"The big stage is a different stage. I think it's an opportunity to bring out even more of the creative," he said of the need to bring a different level of game for the VMA broadcast. "Because when you're on that big stage, you know the whole world is watching you, and people can really see your true talent and your craftsmanship."

He also recalled looking out on the crowd of his peers last year and remembering that it was all just a haze. "Honestly, when I'm onstage, I can't really see the crowd," he said. "The lights and everything shining in your face, it's like a blur and you're in your zone ... [but] you can feel the crowd and your motivation is to stay focused and know that that tape is rolling and you better not mess up now, because it's live."

After VMA performer Chris Brown jumped onstage during one of Swizzy's recent Las Vegas events to unveil the new Beatz tune "Dance Like a White Girl," the producer said the reaction was "pandemonium." That's why he's excited about Brown's VMA slot, warning, "Everybody, get ready. Y'all better get ready."

Brown's choreographers, Rich and Tone, seconded that emotion, telling MTV News that we will see Chris in "1,000 percent mode." Even with his table-hopping 2007 performance still on people's minds, the pair said Sunday night could be on a whole other level. "We've been working with Chris for many years; I've never seen him this way on this performance ever," Tone said. "He's pulling out all his tricks on this one. He's definitely gonna show you something fresh and new; something he has never done before."

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Justin Bieber's VMA-Nominated 'U Smile': Frame By Frame

'We took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist,' director Colin Tilley says of clip, which is up for Best Male Video.
By Jocelyn Vena

In the Colin Tilley-directed "U Smile" video, Justin Bieber meets some girls on the street and becomes smitten with one of them. He then takes her to hang out with him at a big concert hall, where he makes her swoon by playing the piano for her.

The sugary-sweet clip is up for Best Male Video at the 2011 Video Music Awards, and Tilley, who also worked with Bieber on "Never Let You Go," spoke to MTV News about the behind-the-scenes of making the video just days before the VMAs go live Sunday.

The video opens with Bieber meeting some fans outside a theater, and the Flip cam footage they used for audio ended up making the final cut. "During this scene, we were only outside for 15 minutes, but literally paparazzi were everywhere," Tilley recalled. "It was pretty difficult, but I'm happy with the finished product. This whole intro scene was actually done very fast, because we didn't have much time before the sun set, so we really just had to go full-throttle."

While paparazzi and nature proved to be obstacles, a third was making sure that Tilley cast the perfect leading lady. "The girl's gotta be really great ... she was really nice and she did a great job," he said. "Justin and her clicked really well."

The video is actually pretty simple, with the focus of it being on "our classic piano in this beautiful theater, lots of great lighting. This is pretty much focused on Justin's performance.

"This song, in general, when I first heard it, I kind of got the feel that it was a more mature feel for Justin," Tilley continued. "So we took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist and as a kid growing up. ... For me, this was kind of the place he goes every night to practice, so he was willing to take this girl he saw on the street and take her into his world."

For Tilley, the standout shots are of Bieber hanging out in an alleyway, calling to mind the images in Michael Jackson videos. "This is probably my favorite setup in the video," he said. "In this alleyway, it had a whole Michael Jackson feel. It was pretty iconic for Justin at the time."

As it turns out, the video was shot right after the 2010 VMAs, when Bieber took home his first-ever Moonman. "The night before, he had won an award and he just came to set with a great attitude; he was super positive," Tilley said. "I hadn't worked with Justin for probably a year. He's so much fun to work with. He's got a really cool attitude on set."

Christina Aguilera Voices Support For Britney Spears

'I think it's important at this stage in the game to show my support,' the 'Voice' judge says of the Femme Fatale singer.

Since the beginning of their careers in the late '90s, Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears have been portrayed in the media as pop-star rivals. However, years down the line, Aguilera says she's got her fellow 'Mickey Mouse Club,' alum's back.

According to OK! magazine, Xtina had some kind words for Britney when she was asked during the promotional blitz for her new gig as a judge/mentor on NBC's upcoming TV talent competition, "The Voice," if she'd heard Spears' new album, Femme Fatale.

"I've been really hard at work on this show. I haven't had quite the chance to go through the whole thing," Aguilera admitted, but added, "I am a huge supporter of [Britney] in light of the fact that both of our careers started off together and are still going and going strong.

"I just think at this point in the game it's extremely important to be supportive of fellow artists and especially females who get pitted against each other and torn apart."

Aguilera, who also endured comparisons with Lady Gaga during the release of last year's Bionic album, further commented on the special place that the "Hold It Against Me" singer holds in her heart because of their shared career beginnings.

"As an old friend of mine from the Mickey Mouse Club, I think it's important at this stage in the game to show my support," she continued.

With new projects on both of their plates, Aguilera took to Twitter just last week to send out well-wishes to her fellow pop vixen on her new release, writing, "Hey @BritneySpears Congrats on Femme Fatale release! Can't wait to see what you bring in the next video. xo." Spears responded shortly thereafter, tweeting, "Thanks @TheRealXtina. Can't wait to watch you on your new show. Hope we get to hear that voice on The Voice."
