Celine sizzles at Jazz Fest
"HELLO, Jamaica!" shouted Celine Dion to the huge crowd that turned out for her performance at Jamaica Jazz and Blues, at the Greenfied Stadium in Trelawny on Friday night.
After her opening number I Drove All Night at minutes after midnight, the Canadian singer expressed appreciation for the love and support she got from her Jamaican fans.
Every sentence was greeted with claps and loud cheers as she continued to shower praises about the island.
"I'm so excited to be here. We have been enjoying the beautiful weather, the friendliest people, the food," she said.
"I have some making up to do for all that lost time. I can't believe we're really here in your beautiful country; the home of the great Bob Marley, the best place on earth to get an amazing plate of jerked chicken!"
"Happy birthday Jamaica on 50 fabulous years of independence," she said, before getting back to the real business at hand - thrilling fans.
For many, the Dion experience began at the main road leading up to the stadium. From as early as 8:15, the main car park at the stadium was full to capacity due to the overwhelming turnout. Patrons had to make the long trek to the venue having parked some distance away.
Dion delivered Where Does My Heart Beat Now, then Because You Loved Me, which from its first musical strains were greeted with loud screams, many singing along their hands outstretched. A few couples used the opportunity to slow dance.
It was more musical thrill when Dion sang It's All Coming Back To Me Now, Power of Love and one she did in honour of Ella Fitzgerald who died in June 1996, Mr Paganini.
The musical journey continued with Beauty and the Beast and Gold Finger.
The singer had four quick costume changes during her hour-long set and was accompanied by her band, which was on queue throughout her performance. The superb lighting served to enhance her performance.
Local artiste Diana King shared stage with the star performing the song she penned Treat Her Like A Lady, then it was back to more solos. I'm Alive, All By Myself, River Deep, Mountain High and My Heart Will Go On brought the curtains down on a performance that was interlaced with screams, shouts, dancing and lots of love from the fans present.
Earlier in the evening, there were some enjoyable performances from Bryan Art, Jully Black, Tami Chynn, Tessanne Chin, Richie Stephens, Gentleman and a powerful set from Nicole Henry.
It also saw two more awards being presented to local artistes for their contribution to the music. This time, it was to Richie Stephens and Shaggy for promoting Jamaican music across the globe.
The festival climaxed last night with performances from Temptations Review, Damian Marley, Cee Lo Green and Heads of State.

First announced last year , Joel Silver is working to bring the Cartoon Network property Ben 10 to theaters. Today, Variety has confirmed that Albert Torres has boarded the project as the screenwriter.

'Idol' for Broadway
NEW YORK (AP) — A former American Idol contestant is heading to Broadway with a character who, it's safe to say, is truly two-faced.
Constantine Maroulis will play the title dual role in a revival of the musical Jekyll & Hyde that's slated to come to New York in spring 2013 after a 25-week national tour that starts in San Diego on October 2.
The Tony Award nominated musical features a story and lyrics by two-time Oscar winner Leslie Bricusse and music by Frank Wildhorn. It'll be directed and choreographed by Jeff Calhoun.
The musical made its Broadway debut in 1997 with such songs as This is the Moment, A New Life and Someone Like You, earning four Tony nominations. Robert Cuccioli played the lead, and Sebastian Bach and David Hasselhoff later took over.

ABBA fans will soon again be saying "Thank you for the music" with the release of a new track on a special edition of the disbanded 70's pop group's "The Visitors" album.
The record, including new track "From a Twinkling Star to a Passing Angel," is the first official new release by the Swedish group in 18 years.
Universal Music Group spokeswoman Mia Segolsson said Friday that the special edition of "The Visitors" - originally released in 1981 - will be available in stores from April 23.

Nora Arnezeder on the Maniac Remake with Elijah Wood
Out on the press circuit for the upcoming thriller Safe House , starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, actress Nora Arnezeder spoke to ShockTillYouDrop.com about her turn in Maniac .

JaRIA announces honourees
RISING Star winner Romain Virgo has been named artiste of 2011 by the Jamaica Reggae Industry Association (JaRIA).
Virgo was named among a long list of entertainers and others who will be recognised at JaRIA's annual awards ceremony to be held at Emancipation Park on February 25, and serve as a climax for the activities in observance of Reggae Month.
The Artiste of Year category is among three new awards to be handed out by JaRIA at the event. The others are Songwriter of the Year which goes to Bob Andy, and Song of the Year -- One By One by Laza Morgan featuring Mavado.
This year, the honour awards will go to Copeland Forbes (lifetime achievement); Alpha Boys' School (mentorship); Peter Tosh and Gregory Isaacs will receive posthumous awards; while Jack Ruby Hi Fi and Tom 'The Great' Sebastian will receive the sound system award.
Other awardees are sound engineers Errol Thompson and Phillip Smart; producers Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd and Arthur 'Duke' Reid; musicians Ernie Ranglin and Jackie Mittoo; artistes Toots Hibbert and Marcia Griffiths; ska band The Skatellites, and the group Culture.
The late radio announcer Neville Willoughby and promoters of Reggae Sunsplash Syngery will also be recognised for their contribution to the local music industry.
In announcing the list of awardees at the launch of Reggae Month on Tuesday, JaRIA committee member Mary Isaacs noted that this year in recognition of Jamaica's 50th anniversary of independence, a special Golden Jubilee Commemorative Award has been designed and will be presented to the Jamaica Federation of Musicians and Affiliated Artistes, more popularly known as the JFM.
Established in 1958, the JFM has been the primary organisation advocating for the rights and protection, as well as advancing the interests of musicians, artistes and affiliated industry professionals.
Isaacs added that this year's awards presentation will feature a docu-drama style concert with special orchestration of selected pieces of music done originally by some of the awardees.

Gentleman: ready to take on US, South America
LOOKING dapper in denim and 'buckers' cap, German singer Gentleman worked the media last Wednesday at the Kingston office of VP Records, the Queens, New York label distributing his latest album, Diversity.
Gentleman (Tilmann Otto to family and friends) is scheduled to perform tomorrow on the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival at the Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny. In March, he embarks on an even bigger assignment, a tour of California and South America to promote Diversity, his fifth album.
The tour comes at a good time for the lanky Gentleman. Live Your Life, a song produced by Don Corleone, is getting steady airplay on local radio so, too, Warrior, a collaboration with singer Richie Stephens.
Don Corleone produced most of the songs on Diversity, which the 35-year-old Gentleman rates as his most versatile album to date. In addition to Richie Stephens, it has duets with veteran singers Sugar Minott and Red Rose, Christopher Martin and Tanya Stephens.
With a growing fan base back home and throughout Europe, Gentleman says he is keen to break in the US, but not desperate.
"If it happen, it happen," he muttered in his best patois. "I don't lose sleep over that."
Distributed by Island in Europe, Diversity features German musicians and the Firehouse Crew, the band behind several of Luciano and Sizzla's strongest work. The album sold gold (100,000 units) in Germany.
With VP's backing, Gentleman believes he can break new ground in Uncle Sam's country.
"I've done a lot of shows there in the last three years but the records weren't reaching the people," he said. "Now I feel something, because the song (Live Your Life) is doing well in New York and South Florida."
Gentleman played several Californian festivals in 2011, but his shows on the US east coast were mainly club dates in New York City and Washington DC. He said his shows in Germany are sold out, especially in major cities like his hometown Cologne, Berlin and Munich.
France, Poland, Portugal and Spain are among Gentleman's strongest markets outside of Germany.
The youngest of three children, Tilmann Otto grew up in a religious home in Cologne where his father served as a Lutheran minister. His brother Christopher, however, was a big reggae fan who listened to reggae greats like Marley and Dennis Brown and dancehall acts such as Garnet Silk.
He remembers one album from his brother's collection having a significant impact on him becoming a professional singer.
"Wolf and Leopard by Dennis Brown. That really changed my whole view," he said.
A mix of hip-hop and reggae, Gentleman's first album, Trodin On, was released in 1999. It set the pace for Confidence, his roots reggae follow-up which sold platinum (250,000 units in Germany) in 2004.
That year, Gentleman had a sizeable hit song in Jamaica with Intoxication, produced by Don Corleone.
Gentleman has a busy tour schedule for Diversity. He opens his California dates on March 12 in San Francisco at The Fillmore before moving on to Panama one week later.
A month-long European trek starts in Hamburg, Germany on April 28.

Vera Farmiga Marches to the Beat of The Drummer
Vera Farmiga has joined the cast of Randall Miller's The Drummer , Variety reports. She'll appear opposite Aaron Eckhart in the leading role of Beach Boys drummer Denis Wilson.
The film is said to chart the last six years of Wilson's life, during which he created some of the finest music of his career. Eckhart is deep into training for the role, learning to play drums and piano as well as training vocally to sing on screen in the picture. The only Beach Boy who surfed, Dennis Wilson ironically drowned in 1983 in Marina Del Rey a few years after he finished and released "Pacific Ocean Blue," his solo masterpiece.

Capleton eyes LATAM
FIERY singjay Capleton hopes his headline appearance at the February 4 Greenland Music Festival in Cali, Colombia will broaden his fan base throughout Latin America (LATAM).
It will be Capleton's first appearance in the South American country. Recently, he told the Observer that Colombia is among the countries in that region he is looking to make a mark.
"There are so many places I haven't been before where the music is dominant," Capleton said. "Wi getting a lotta call from places like Brazil, Venezuela and Chile."
Last April, Capleton performed for the first time in Argentina, appearing at a festival in the capital Buenos Aires. He is scheduled to do a show in Venezuela in March.
The Greenland Festival is a multi-faceted event built around spectacular pyrotechnics. According to its promoters, it is also geared 'toward the unification and promotion of the most positive thing in our land. In order to promote tourism, our talent, climate and culture'.

No celebrations for Coxsone
LEGENDARY music producer Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd would have celebrated his 80th birthday yesterday. But concerns are being expressed that eight years after his passing, nothing is being done to celebrate the birth of this musical giant.
His niece, music industry veteran Maxine Stowe, is among the peeved.
Stowe, a former executive at Sony International, is head of Jahnanda Entertainment Corporation, a consultant company that specialises in intellectual property.
She noted that Dodd is being ignored during a period of significance for Jamaican music.
"Seeing that his birthday falls around the time of Jazz and Blues (Festival), just ahead of Reggae Month and the birthdays of Dennis Brown and Bob Marley, it comes rather odd that his life and his work is not celebrated," she stated.
"Anybody celebrating 50 years of anything in Jamaica, if it don't involve Studio One
you have a big gap in your story because the music and independence go together," she added. "The birth of ska is the birth of Independence."
Stowe noted that her uncle was the first black man to own a recording studio in Jamaica. Just before Jamaica's independence in August 1962 he launched Studio One, setting the pace for his great rival, Arthur 'Duke' Reid, who opened his Treasure Isle studio shortly after.
A number of projects to preserve Dodd's legacy were announced during a press conference at Studio One on the first anniversary of his death in May 2005.
These included the establishment of a foundation in his honour; construction of a museum at Studio One;
the commissioning of a bust of Dodd; cash grants for a student to take up a three-year scholarship at the Edna Manley School of the Visual and Performing Arts; and helping to maintain the Alpha Boys' School Band.
Apart from the bust, none of the ther elements have yet materialised.
"All those things have to be revisited, the passing of Mrs Dodd throw back certain things," said Courtney Dodd, the younger of Dodd's sons. "All that will go back on the agenda with the family getting together to sort out certain things."
The younger Dodd is currently in charge of Studio One operations. The facility was closed for some time after the passing of the Studio One matriarch, Norma, just over one year ago.
"We are just trying to get the thing up and running again with some good artistes remodelling some of the original riddims," Dodd told Splash.

Gentleman: ready to take on US, South America
LOOKING dapper in denim and 'buckers' cap, German singer Gentleman worked the media last Wednesday at the Kingston office of VP Records, the Queens, New York label distributing his latest album, Diversity.
Gentleman (Tilmann Otto to family and friends) is scheduled to perform tomorrow on the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival at the Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny. In March, he embarks on an even bigger assignment, a tour of California and South America to promote Diversity, his fifth album.
The tour comes at a good time for the lanky Gentleman. Live Your Life, a song produced by Don Corleone, is getting steady airplay on local radio so, too, Warrior, a collaboration with singer Richie Stephens.
Don Corleone produced most of the songs on Diversity, which the 35-year-old Gentleman rates as his most versatile album to date. In addition to Richie Stephens, it has duets with veteran singers Sugar Minott and Red Rose, Christopher Martin and Tanya Stephens.
With a growing fan base back home and throughout Europe, Gentleman says he is keen to break in the US, but not desperate.
"If it happen, it happen," he muttered in his best patois. "I don't lose sleep over that."
Distributed by Island in Europe, Diversity features German musicians and the Firehouse Crew, the band behind several of Luciano and Sizzla's strongest work. The album sold gold (100,000 units) in Germany.
With VP's backing, Gentleman believes he can break new ground in Uncle Sam's country.
"I've done a lot of shows there in the last three years but the records weren't reaching the people," he said. "Now I feel something, because the song (Live Your Life) is doing well in New York and South Florida."
Gentleman played several Californian festivals in 2011, but his shows on the US east coast were mainly club dates in New York City and Washington DC. He said his shows in Germany are sold out, especially in major cities like his hometown Cologne, Berlin and Munich.
France, Poland, Portugal and Spain are among Gentleman's strongest markets outside of Germany.
The youngest of three children, Tilmann Otto grew up in a religious home in Cologne where his father served as a Lutheran minister. His brother Christopher, however, was a big reggae fan who listened to reggae greats like Marley and Dennis Brown and dancehall acts such as Garnet Silk.
He remembers one album from his brother's collection having a significant impact on him becoming a professional singer.
"Wolf and Leopard by Dennis Brown. That really changed my whole view," he said.
A mix of hip-hop and reggae, Gentleman's first album, Trodin On, was released in 1999. It set the pace for Confidence, his roots reggae follow-up which sold platinum (250,000 units in Germany) in 2004.
That year, Gentleman had a sizeable hit song in Jamaica with Intoxication, produced by Don Corleone.
Gentleman has a busy tour schedule for Diversity. He opens his California dates on March 12 in San Francisco at The Fillmore before moving on to Panama one week later.
A month-long European trek starts in Hamburg, Germany on April 28.

Shaggy, Richie Stephens honoured at Jazz
FLORENCE HALL,Trelawny - Art of Music Production, promoters of the Jazz and Blues Festival last night honoured Jamaican performers Richie Stephens and Shaggy during the event held at the Trelawny Multi-purpose Stadium.
Richie Stephens was honoured for his nearly two decades of contribution to Jamaican music, while Shaggy was given the award for promoting Jamaica's culture internationally.
Richie Stephens was called on stage to be honoured following his awesome performance during which he was joined on stage by German performer, Gentleman.
On Thursday night, the opening night of the festival, veteran performers Yellow Man, Marcia Griffiths, Lloyd Parks and Derrick Morgan were honoured for their sterling contribution to Jamaica's music.

The St Mary-born Capleton broke through during the early 1990s, with a succession of risqué hit songs that included Number One Pon The Look Good Chart, Alms House and Lotion Man.
His music took a more spiritual tone later that decade at a time when the dancehall went through a cultural transformation. His conversion to Rastafari resulted in several hard-hitting albums such as More Fire and Reign Of Fire.
Commercially, his biggest songs are Tour and Wings Of The Morning, which were minor hits in the United States. Their success earned him a stint with Russell Simmons' Def Jam Records.

Veterans deliver at fest
VETERANS Marcia Griffiths, Yellowman, George Nook and Maxi Priest were outstanding on the first night of the three-day 2012 staging of the Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival at the Greenfield Stadium in Trelawny on Thursday.
The golden voiced and energetic Griffiths had the crowd engaged throughout her performance as she went through her catalogue of hit songs which included I Shall Sing, Feel Like Jumping.
Yellowman showed patrons attending the festival that he is still 'King of the Dancehall'. Jumping, kicking and running from one end of the stage to the next, he delivered his favourite such as Zungu Zungu Zeng, I'm Getting Married, Come Back Darling. And, when he belted out a few bars from the Fats Domino cover Blueberry Hill, he was in his element.
"This song is for the ladies. I don't care if you have a boyfriend. When I do it ladies must see how I look," he said. And, with that comment, off came his shirt and some provocative gyration.
George Nooks and Maxi Priest had the audience eating out of their hands.
The evening, which organisers dedicated to Jamaica's 50th year of Independence, saw great performances from all the artistes billed.

Ky-Mani Marley and Luciano kept the energy flowing by ensuring there wasn't a boring moment.

Earlier in the evening, the festival's organising committee presented awards to some artistes who have helped to set the foundation on which today's entertainers enjoy. Theophilus Beckford, the Easy Snappin' man
In commemoration of Jamaica’s 50th anniversary of independence from Britain, the Jamaica Observer’s Entertainment section recognises 50 persons who made significant, yet unheralded contributions, to the country’s culture. We begin with musician/singer Theophilus Beckford.
NOT many Jamaicans were familiar with Theophilus Beckford when he was murdered near his St Andrew home in February 2001. He died a forgotten, broken man at age 65.
Known as Snappin', Beckford's name is etched in history books as the man who recorded the first hit song out of Jamaica. That distinction goes to Easy Snappin', which was released in 1959.
Produced by Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd, Easy Snappin' was a hit in Europe.
Beckford sang and played piano on the song which was built around his American boogie-woogie influences.
Beckford died six months after he was honoured for his contribution to Jamaican music at Tribute To The Greats, an annual event produced by Kingsley 'King Omar' Goodison. It was just recognition for an unheralded pioneer.
"He was a true contributor to the music, Easy Snappin' was the first ska song," said Goodison. "Snappin' always spoke about music from New Orleans. He loved music from that region."
Though he had minor hits with the self-produced Good Morning Miss Clara and Tell Me Little Lady, which was produced by Dodd, Beckford never had another duplicated the success of Easy Snappin'.
However, the piano skills he learned while growing up at Boys' Town never left him. His playing can be heard on three classic songs from the 1960s: Desmond Dekker's Honour Your Mother and Father, and Prince Buster's Blackhead Chiney Man and You Got To Go.
In the 1970s, Beckford was plucked from obscurity by guitarist/producer Earl 'Chinna' Smith to play on Fade Away, done by singer Junior Byles. He also had a small role in the 1978 low-budget film, Rockers.
Sadly, Theophilus Beckford never earned substantially from his trailblazing song. In the early 1990s when a European denim company reportedly used Easy Snappin' for its ad campaign, lawyers for Beckford contacted them on the matter of royalties. A spokesman said they thought he had died!
Beckford's son, Lloyd, said he was at odds with Dodd over royalties at the time of his death. Easy Snappin' is used for reggae compilation albums mainly in Europe.

The Sundance Film Festival is often full of surprises, and every once in a while, an independently-made movie with a big name cast shows up in the "Premieres" section without already having distribution.
