Although Eric Bana had signed on to play the role last year , Variety is now reporting that Gerard Butler has taken the lead in Robert Luketic's diamond heist thriller Brilliant , being produced by Lakeshore Entertainment based on the first screenplay by Gillian Gorfil, producer of Edward Zwick's Blood Diamond .
Butler, who recently appeared in Machine Gun Preacher , previously worked with Luketic on The Ugly Truth .
The film will feature the actor as a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist. Expect more casting announcements to follow in the very near future.
